The rise of Donald Trump has left the United States (US) in turmoil and taken a toll on families on both sides of the political divide.

One such case is that of Gayle McCormick, a retired California prison guard, who has recently separated from her husband of 22 years. The self described "Democrat leaning toward socialist", told Reuters her husband shocked her when he mentioned he would be voting for Trump while having lunch with friends.

"It totally undid me that he could vote for Trump," 73-year-old McCormick told Reuters, saying she felt "betrayed" by the revelation. "It opened up areas between us I had not faced before. I realised how far I had gone in my life to accept things I would have never accepted when I was younger."

Sadly, McCormick's case is not unique, as three months after the US presidential election, Americans say the divide is as strong as ever. A Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll reveals it has worsened, suggesting a wider gap between US Democrats and Republicans.

The number of respondents to a Reuters/Ipsos poll of 6,426 people between December 27 to January 18, who fight with their loved ones over politics increased by 6 percentage points from a pre-election poll in October. Sixteen percent revealed that they have cut off ties with a family or friend because of the election.

When it comes to marriage, a recent survey conducted by UCLA politics professor Lynn Vavreck showed 60% of Democrats would want their child to marry from their own party, while 63% of Republicans want their child to marry a GOP supporter.
