In 2013, firefighter Michael Materia rescued Roseann Sdoia one of the many victims injured in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings.

Meeting under strange circumstances after two bombs detonated on April 15, 2013, was a horrific and chaotic scene. The bomb attack severely injured Sdoia’s right leg. Materia, one of the first responders on the scene, was put in charge of taking Sdoia to the hospital.

Despite being strangers, Materia stayed by her side and regularly visited her in the hospital where Sdoia's right leg had to be amputated. After a few months, their friendship turned into a romance. “There was an interest growing in each other, kind of quietly, until we talked about it,” Ms. Sdoia told The New York Times.

Materia popped the question on December 4, 2016, while the couple was on a trip to Nantucket and they plan to marry in October or November this year, reported The New York Post.

On February 1, 2016, the pair decided to take part in the annual event called the Empire State Building Run-Up, where they walked all the way up the building's 1,576 steps to the observation deck to raise money for the Challenged Athletes Foundation, which played a major role in Sdoia's recovery. She wears a prosthesis.

Sdoia told the Times that Materia's support "hasn’t wavered" in the four years they have been together. "We’ve spent a lot of time together,’’ she said, “and from that we got to see each other’s characters and really just bond.”
