COLOMBO: The cow had apparently stumbled upon the chain which had been hidden in a rice pot and gobbled it up. Of course, the animal had to be operated upon to recover the chain from its stomach, according to a media report.

The incident took place in Vadamarachchi. The cow had strayed into a house while its owner was away and swallowed the chain while eating rice from the pot. People in war-torn Jaffna often use rice pots and paddy barns to hide their valuables in.

Upon his return, the owner found his chain missing and then noticed the strange behaviour of the cow. He took the animal to the veterinary surgeon who recovered the chain from its stomach.
