HBO has greenlit a pilot for a Watchmen TV series in order to find another tentpole to replace Game of Thrones.

According to a report in Entertainment Weekly, Damon Lindelof of The Leftovers fame is adapting the 1986 comic series created by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. The report also mentions that Lindelof's iteration will be different than what Zack Snyder did in 2009.

These stories are set in an alternate universe where the presence of superheroes has changed the course of history. In the story, a group of heroes known as the Watchmen encounter a massive, deadly conspiracy while investigating the murder of one of their own.

There are have been incidents that pilots do not get made into full series but Watchmen may have a better fate than others. This would be HBO's first superhero title with rest of the networks and streaming services already overflowing with the shows of the same genre.

Watchmen is supposedly a tricky subject to adapt, which HBO knows a thing or two about with experience in creating Game of Thrones and Westworld.
