51st anniversary of the first ever episode broadcast of Star Trek franchise was celebrated on Thursday. Five decades of the sci-fi franchise have given countless hours of joy and inspiration to the generations of Trekkies. So far we have six series with 725 episodes in total to devour and do the mother of all binge watching!
The latest series, Star Trek: Discovery, which features a new ship and a new crew is set to air on September 25. Trekkies in India can follow it on Netflix. 15 new episodes will take the total to 740 episodes. Netflix analysed the viewing data of 104 million members across 190 countries who have watched the following Star Trek series on the streaming platform.
Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Enterprise, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: Voyager.
According to Netflix data, for 695 episodes available for streaming, nearly 12,000 fans have spent over 536 hours (or 22 days) watching Star Trek. The data also reveals that Voyager boasts the most revisited episode in the universe: 'Endgame: Parts 1 & 2' is the most re-watched episode in the entire franchise. Indian Trekkies clearly agree since this is the episode that they return to most frequently as well.
Not surprisingly, the first episodes of a series will usually be the most watched. It turns out that episodes that introduce iconic races, characters, or captains tend to be re-visited most. And of course, time travel, alien abductions or crossover episodes are big winners with Star Trek fans.
While The Next Generation and The Original Series have bigger audiences, Voyager and Deep Space Nine fans are better repeat customers, more likely to return for their favourite episodes.
