'Ray': Netflix releases teaser of anthology series based on Satyajit Ray's stories, reveals star cast

’Ray’ will have four short dramatic stories based on love, lust, betrayal and truth, minded together by the visionary writing of Satyajit Ray.

Netfix on Friday (May 28) released the teaser for its upcoming anthology series, ‘Ray’, based on the stories of esteemed filmmaker Satyajit Ray. Helmed by Abhishek Chaubey, Srijit Mukherji and Vasan Bala, ‘Ray’ will premier on June 25.

’Ray’ will have four short dramatic stories based on love, lust, betrayal and truth, binded together by the visionary writing of Satyajit Ray. The stellar star cast of the anthology includes Manoj Bajpayee, Ali Fazal, Kay Kay Menon, Harshvarrdhan Kapoor, Radhika Madan Shweta Basu Prasad, Anindita Bose, Gajraj Rao and Bidita Bag among others.

Sharing the teaser of ‘Ray’ on Instagram, Netflix India wrote, “Great actors, amazing directors and unique stories from a legendary writer! BRB, pinching ourselves to see if this is actually real  #Ray, premieres June 25!.”

Directed by Abhishek Chaubey, the first story is titled ‘Hungama Hai Kyon Barpa’ and stars Manoj Bajpayee and Gajraj Rao. Helmed by Srijit Mukherji, the second story titled, ‘Forget Me Not’ stars Ali Fazal and Shweta Basu Prasad.

The third story, titled ‘Bahrupiya’ is also directed by Srijit Mukherji and stars Kay Kay Menon and Bidita Bag. Starring Harshvardhan Kapoor, the fourth story is directed by Vasan Bala and is titled ‘Sotlight’.

2021 is the centenary year of Satyajit Ray. Often regarded as one of the greatest directors of world cinema, Ray prominently worked in Bengali cinema. Ray visited London in the year 1950, where he saw Vittorio De Sica's 1948 film 'Ladri di biciclette' (Bicycle Thieves) which inspired him to become a film-maker. In 1955, Ray made his directorial with 'Pather Panchali' and directed 36 films, comprising 29 feature films, five documentaries, and two short films. 

He passed away on April 23, 1992. Both National Film Awards and an honorary, Ray won Academy Award at the 64th Academy Awards in 1992. He was also bestowed with India's highest award in cinema, the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, in 1984, and India's highest civilian award, Bharat Ratna, in 1992.
