The dialogue 'We Were On A Break' is one of the iconic ones from hit television show Friends. Ross Geller, played by David Schwimmer, and Rachel Green, played by Jennifer Aniston were part of the will they-won't they game that played out over ten seasons of the show. Turns out, the original plan was to keep them together from the beginning.

Does that change your perspective towards the story?

In an interview with Metro, executive producer and director of the show Kevin S Bright revealed that initially the couple was not supposed to go on a break at all. It was the change of heart for writers and executive producers Marta Kauffman and David Crane that altered the course of the TV relationship.

"I would say initially when (Ross and Rachel) was planned it wasn’t planned that way, that came a little bit later," he told the daily.

"It allowed us to have fun with the show and give people something to root for. We were well aware the audience wanted to keep them together but everything that was keeping them apart – we realised when we got them together when the first kiss happened we go, 'Wow, the air has kind of gone out of the balloon.' There wasn’t that sexual tension anymore."

The breakup episode hurt a lot of viewers. The phrase, we were on a break, still divides the fandom and starts wars. Kauffman and Crane engineered the perfect device to keep the audience engaged. Bright agrees.

"I thought what Marta and David did, which was such a brilliant and brave move with their relationship, as soon as everyone got their wish the wish was taken away. It made it so much better when they did get together."

For those who believed in the 'Lobster Theory,' Bright's perspective makes sense. But for those who think Rachel should not have hurt her career for Ross, we are not here to start a fight.
