When Mini Mathur planned to host a travel show Mini Me with her daughter Sairah, she also decided to produce it. Not only that, she shot the travelogue with an all-women crew! She chose Karishma Kohli who has assisted Kabir Khan (Mini’s husband) on Bajrangi Bhaijaan, New York and Tubelight to direct the show, while the sound and camera was handled by Priyanka Singh. Also, in every place they visited —from Munich to Paris, Venice, Athens, Rome and Florence among others —Mini hired a local female crew for the shoot.

She says, “When I decided to do this mother-daughter travelogue, I wanted to take her through the experiences my way. And, because it was my child I decided to produce it myself. I didn’t want somebody else dictate to me how she should be presented or make her say scripted lines. I wanted it to be a very organic experience and keep it as real as possible.” In fact, Sairah became the presenter, tripod assistant and stylist!

Ask her why she picked an all-women team and Mini explains she didn’t want a crew that would intimidate her daughter. “I picked Karishma to direct because Sairah is very comfortable with her. She has been around Sairah since she was born. That way, Sairah wouldn’t be conscious of the camera and neither would it become intrusive. Karishma was directing and handling a camera.”

Mini believes that with women there is a different kind of energy. “We just went with the flow whether it was too hot or cold. Also, only women can understand while shooting with a child — if she is tired or wants to take a break just to eat ice cream. Women from different cities — even those who weren’t mothers got it intuitively,” reasons Mini, whose show also started airing close to Women’s Day.
