As India celebrates its 72nd year of Independence, we asked television actors what do they crave freedom from. Fanaticism, hatred, bad roads, pollution and traffic problems rate high on their list. Here’s what they have to say.

KARAN PATEL

I want independence from society’s attitude towards women about the way they dress. If they wear short skirts, they are judged. I think it’s time we stop stooping so low and create a country we are all proud of.

DIVYANKA TRIPATHI  DAHIYA

I want freedom from bad roads in Mumbai. We travel for long hours to reach the sets and most of us end up having backaches because of the roads that are fit for bullock carts!

POOJA BANERJEE

I want to be free from extremism. With so much social media and exposure, people have become opinionated, which is good in a way, but it eventually leads to extreme hatred towards any particular incident or sector in general. I want people to actually follow the policy of ‘live and let live’, and stop being so interfering.

VIVIAN DSENA

I want independence from bad roads, traffic and potholes of Mumbai. It has become so bad that it takes hours to reach from Andheri to Naigaon where my show’s set is erected. Mumbai is a big city with a heart but these conditions really need to be addressed.

ARJUN BIJLANI

I want to see my city free from garbage on the road and in the sea. It is polluting the environment. Mumbai seriously needs a makeover.

KEITH SEQUEIRA

I want independence from hatred. Whether it’s because of religion, sex, ideologies or the way we dress, there is a lot of negativity, which comes from a deep sense of insecurity or from a lack of understanding. I think rather than judging others, one should look within.

SAUMYA TANDON

I want freedom from the slavery of set thoughts. When you discuss politics, religion, sexual preference, favourite movie, actor, etc. or when you post your views on social media, people react with anger and hateful messages. Are we so dumb and unevolved that even after 71 years of being free, we still cannot think freely, and accept people with different opinions? Are we going to pass on the same set of ideology to the future generation without any discourse? Let’s free our minds and thoughts and make a better country. Happy Independence Day.

DHEERAJ DHOOPAR

I want to be free from the hassles of the daily commute and endless traffic. I think the efforts one puts in to reach the set and perform, might be killing the fun in an actor’s life. After spending hours travelling, one is half exhausted before he/she even starts shooting. This Independence Day, I wish for more productivity and less wastage of time.
