World Forgiveness Day is on July 7. It is a day to put aside our differences and forgiving others as well as seeking forgiveness for our faults. It is a sweet release from the grudges we’ve held and the ugly smack of bitterness in our hearts. A day to cultivate a deeper sense of compassion and the spirit to offer forgiveness.

But some acts are too heart-wrenching and brutal to forgive. Barely an episode of Game of Thrones goes by that fails to heckle us. George RR Martin receives a barrage of hate mails with every plot twist on the show. On the occasion of World Forgiveness Day, let’s take a look at some of the most ruthless moments on the show and determine whether we have the character to forgive George RR Martin for putting us through the savagery.

1. Brandon Stark being pushed through a window

Brandon had an affinity for climbing the walls and ramparts of the Winterfell castle, when he discovered Jaime and Cersei in an incestuous tryst. Jaime shoved Bran to his apparent death, “The things I do for love”, and he sighed nonchalantly. A child’s innocent capering about that set the events of the entire series into motion.

2. The Red Wedding

Who can forget The Red Wedding? Just Thinking about it has you reaching out for the tissues and simultaneously seething with rage at Tywin’s underhanded war tactics. “The Lannisters send their regards”, smirks Roose Bolton as he stabs Robb Stark.

3. The Castration of Theon Greyjoy

A lot of hatred was directed towards Theon Greyjoy for the supposed murder of Brandon and Rickon Stark, while he was being tortured by Ramsay Bolton. A lot of us were even rooting for Bolton, professing that Theon had it coming. Until the scene where prostitutes are sent in to seduce him before his captor cuts off his penis. It is the final nail in the coffin, which accelerates his transformation to Reek, Ramsay’s pet.

4. Shireen Baratheon at the Stake

In spite of her mother’s disapproval, Stannis Baratheon always stood by his daughter. Melissandre convinced him that he was destined to reign on the Iron Throne, the one who would fulfil all the prophecies and unify the 7 kingdoms plagued by greed and corruption. The only way to achieve victories over his enemies was to sacrifice Shireen. Tied to a post and begging her family for mercy, Shireen’s death was one of the most gut-wrenching moments on the show and high on the unforgivable angle of the meter.

5. Hold the Door

Meera yells at him to ‘Hold the door’ while she drags Bran’s body further away who is warging in two places at once. Present-day Hodor tries to hold the door to prevent the White Walkers from getting through to the other side, who eventually break through and rip him to shreds. Bran’s meddling leads to Wylis collapsing and screaming until his words are garbled into a hoarse, ‘Hodor’.
