HBO unveiled the first official trailer for the third season of their anthology series True Detective starring Mahershala Ali. The video was released on Monday morning (IST) after giving us the glimpse of what's to come in 2019, including the first footage of final season of Game of Thrones.

As the 1.11-minutes-long trailer begins we see Ali's Detective Wayne Hays, a state police detective from Northwest Arkansas,  investigate cases in town but soon we realise there are things this guy had buried in the past.

"Things I have seen, things I know, wouldn't do anything but cause harm," Hays narrates in the background. "My whole brain's a bunch of missing pieces."

The switch to old looking Hays and his still young wife (possibly a ghost image of Carmen Ejogo' character Amelia Reardon) indicates that we will be looking at a timeline jumps in the story.

The story will play out in the Ozark Mountains that primarily covers Arkansas, Missouri, and Oklahoma in the United States of America. It will follow a macabre crime and a mystery that will deepen over decades and cover three separate time periods.

Apart from Ali and Ejogo, Stephen Dorff, Scoot McNairy, Mamie Gummer, and Justice League star Ray Fisher make the top line of the cast.

Showrunner Nic Pizzolatto has returned. He is credited as the lone writer for the series with exception of the fourth episode which he co-wrote with David Milch of Deadwood. Jeremy Saulnier has taken up the director's chair after the disappointing season two that sorely missed Cary Fukunaga.

True Detective season three will air in January 2019.
