Donald Glover just made history by becoming the first black person to win an Emmy for directing a comedy series at 2017 Emmy Awards.

The actor-turned-director accepted the Emmy for best directing for a comedy series, thanking fellow Atlanta director and producer Hiro Murai for teaching him the art of directing, as well as for being his best friend.

During his acceptance speech, Glover shared, "This really belongs to Hiro Murai. He taught me everything about directing. He had the eye for this show and he's just amazing. I really want to give this to Hiro and just say, 'I love you and thank you for being my best friend."

He also shared, "Man. Yo, first I want to thank the great algorithm that put us all here. I want to thank my parents who are in the audience. This is nuts."

There have previously been three black directors who won Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series, all in the '90s: Thomas Carter, who won twice for Equal Justice, Paris Barclay, who won twice for NYPD Blue, and Eric Laneuville, who won for I'll Fly Away.

Glover also breaks a four-year streak of female directors taking home the award for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series.

Actor-writer Lena Waithe of Master of None also became part of history by being the first black woman to win a writing Emmy. Waithe shared the credit with series creator Aziz Ansari for writing the 'Thanksgiving' episode in the second season of Netflix show.

During her speech, Waithe gave a shout out to her 'LGBTQIA family' and asked them to don their capes and "go out there and conquer the world. It would not be as beautiful as it is if we weren't in it."
