Google has already launched the first developer preview of Android P. However, there is no mention of what the new iteration of Android will be called. The next developer preview of Android P is expected to arrive in May.

For now, let’s take a quick look at the new features introduced to Android P:

1. Make way for the notch

When Apple introduced the iPhone X with a notch, it was expected that Android manufacturers would also follow trend or rather take ‘inspiration’ from its design. Upcoming smartphones such as the Oppo R15 and LG G7 are all rumoured to have adopted this design-style.

And that's why, the new Android P is optimized for notches. For starters, the new OS might cut into the top display area, as it will start putting notifications right next to the time (which is now moved from the far right to the far left). You will now see up to four different app icons towards the top. Additionally, if you have more notifications, a small dot with appear will appear and let you know that you have more notifications awaiting you.

2. Improved messaging notifications

In Android P, Google has focused on improving visibility and function in notifications.

The company has designed a new notification style called the MessagingStyle which highlights who is messaging and how you can reply. You can also show conversations, attach photos and stickers, and even suggest smart replies.

3. Multi-camera API

With the new Android P, Google will allow third-party developers to make more use of dual cameras on the front or rear of the smartphones. The company states that users can access streams simultaneously from two or more physical cameras on devices running the new Android iteration. On devices with either dual-front or dual-back cameras, users can create features not possible with just a single camera, such as seamless zoom, bokeh, and stereo vision.

Other improvements in camera include new Session parameters that help to reduce delays during initial capture, and Surface sharing that lets camera clients handle various use-cases without the need to stop and start camera streaming, the company mentioned in a blog.

4. HDR and HEIF

Android P also includes adds built-in support for HDR VP9 Profile 2, so you can now deliver HDR-enabled movies to your users from YouTube, Play Movies, and other sources on HDR-capable devices. Google has also introduced HEIF, a popular format for photos that improves compression to save on storage and network data. This will allow users to easily send and utilize HEIF images from your backend server. With HEIF, you can do a jpeg-to-heic conversion using ImageDecoder or BitmapFactory to obtain a bitmap from jpeg, and you can use HeifWriter in the new Support Library alpha to write HEIF still images from YUV byte buffer, Surface, or Bitmap.

5. Autofill improvements

Google has improved the Autofill option which will make it easier for password managers to enter your password for you, which will eliminate the constant need of copy-pasting the password in different apps. Google says, “We're continuing to improve the Autofill Framework based on feedback from users and developers.” Android P also focuses on key bugfixes, and includes new APIs that allows password managers to improve the Autofill user experience, such as better dataset filtering, input sanitization, and compatibility mode.
