2016 wasn’t the best year for Samsung. In all honesty, it could be deemed as one of the worst phases for the company as their popular smartphone series – particularly, the Galaxy Note 7 devices started to 'self-combust'. The smartphone’s batteries were to be blamed.

On the other hand, 2016 was a good year for Apple. The company’s iPhone 7 was reportedly the world's best-selling smartphone in the first quarter of 2017. Strategy Analytics stated that global smartphone shipments reached 353.3 million units in the first quarter of 2017. Of that 353.3 million, 21.5 million were the iPhone 7, with 17.4 million the iPhone 7 Plus.

Present day

Even after most people thought that Samsung would scrap off the Galaxy Note series after such a ‘burning’ disaster, the company announced the Galaxy Note 8, in a non-flashy event in New York this month, with the hope to put back the shredded pieces of the brand’s image.

The phablet packs in an edge-to-edge display with a fingerprint sensor on the back. It also sports the same quad HD+ Super AMOLED screen that Samsung brought to the S8 and S8+. The Galaxy Note 8 is also comes equipped with a dual-lens camera, which lets users capture DSLR-level portraits along with a dual-capture mode too. The company also introduced a time-saving feature called App Pair, which makes the most of the Note 8's expansive screen, allowing users to pair any two apps of their choice that will always launch side by side for easier multitasking. Additionally, another new feature called Live Messages allows users to draw or write on the screen, while the Note 8 creates an animated GIF.

The device is slated to go on sale from September 15, around the same time when Apple is expected to unveil the next iteration of the iPhone. According to reports, this will not just be another model. It is speculated that the 10th anniversary model of iPhone is said to come with some exceptional features.

Now, the question arises. Should Apple be worried about Samsung's Galaxy Note 8?

There is no argument here that Samsung offers a great-looking device with some powerful specifications. It sports a design with slick lines and a futuristic feel, along with a smart S-Pen stylus. Despite the Galaxy Note 8 being an impressive device, people will yet, wait for the unveiling of iPhone 8 to make a decision. CNET’s Chris Matyszczyk believes, “Cupertino will have likely looked at the Note 8 and noted that its price allows any potential "iPhone 8" pricing – I'll bet you $999 that the so-called iPhone 8 will start at $999 – to reach four figures without seeming gougeish.”

Price will play a major factor while purchasing the new iPhone as reports claim that this will be one of the most-expensive iPhone ever. Apart from this, the upcoming iPhone 8 has been facing many issues, which if not rectified, could see some of the biggest and anticipated features disabled when the device launches in September.

According to Fast Company, a source with knowledge of the situation states that June was a tense month for the engineers and designers on Apple’s iPhone team with “a sense of panic in the air”. Due to problems regarding wireless charging and a 3D front camera, the upcoming iPhone 8 could possibly be delayed as well. The report suggests that these are software issues and employees at the company are working around the clock to fix it.

These reasons could be enough for Apple to worry, a bit. Samsung has delivered some of its best features to the Galaxy Note 8, powering it all in, without compromising on the design. If Apple does reveal something outstanding, it could take the crown.

Till then, *crosses fingers, and hopes none of them explode*
