Samsung has doubled the number of its AR emojis; instead of 18 pre-set expressions, there are now 36, with a promise of more on their way.

Animated versions of ourselves have slowly been making their way into messages for more inventive and personalized ways of expression. Furthermore, camera and sensor technology is putting users' expressions on to characters, animals and emoji icons.

Samsung's AR Emoji debuted alongside the Galaxy S9 and allows users to create their own cartoon replica by selecting hair and clothing styles. Hit record and you can create videos of ‘your emoji' talking or singing. The feature first offered a collection of 18 pre-set expressions, such as a crying-with-laughter face, puzzled expression and blowing a kiss. The options available now number 36 and are set to number 54 soon. Users will need to make sure they've updated their camera app via the 'My apps' section of the Galaxy Apps store. Once that's done, the new selection will appear in the keyboard, or users can go to the Gallery app to copy/paste over to other messaging apps.

In the beginning, Samsung's AR emojis may not have won over tech enthusiasts in terms of originality or style, however since the brand introduced beloved Disney characters into the mix, acceptance has been building.

In March, iconic characters Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse made their way into the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ phones, and since then Donald Duck has joined the team. And just last week, Samsung welcomed all five members of Pixar's Super family, the Incredibles, along with Frozone into the gang. This could give the brand a competitive edge over other tech brands already on the scene such as Snapchat with its Bitmoji, a cartoon version of oneself created by manually selecting a face shape, eye color etc, or iPhone X users' access to Apple's 3D face-mapping technology (FaceID) that mimics facial expressions on animals or emoji
