MWC 2018: All smartphones unveiled by Samsung, Nokia and Sony

The biggest mobile event of the year, Mobile World Congress is back, and companies such as Samsung, Sony and Nokia and others have announced some of their flagship devices. Let’s take a quick at all the smartphones launched till now:

The biggest mobile event of the year, Mobile World Congress is back, and companies such as Samsung, Sony and Nokia and others have announced some of their flagship devices. Let’s take a quick at all the smartphones launched till now:

Samsung

Samsung on Sunday night unveiled its much awaited S9 and S9+ at the Galaxy Unpacked 2018 event. Both the S9 and S9+ devices had been leaked several times at different occasions. While the Galaxy S9 is priced at $720 (approximately Rs 46,600) while the S9+ is priced at $840 (approximately Rs 54,400).

Both the flagship product, S9 and S9+ would have the Infinity Display like the 2017 Samsung's smartphones. The South Korean giant had said that the pre-orders for both the devices had begun on Sunday and the general sale would start on March 16.

Both the next gen Galaxy smartphones sports dual lens with 12-megapixel front camera and 8-megapixel front-facing camera. S9 and Galaxy S9+ would have improved features for Samsung's smart assistant Bixby, the company said. Both the smartphones would have speakers that give a surround sound-like experience. The devices would come with wireless charging and a headphone jack.

Samsung also launched a feature called AR Emoji, which allows a user to take a selfie and turn it into their own custom emoji. Samsung has also combined with Disney so that users can use Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse and The Incredibles as AR Emojis.

Samsung's AR Emoji feature would directly be competing with Apple's iPhone X feature called Animoji. Talking about specifications, Samsung's S9 runs Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 processor. S9 has 4GB of RAM and S9+ has a 6GB of RAM. S9 comes with 64GB of storage and support for microSD cards. Both the devices are dust and water resistant.

One of the striking highlight of the S9 is its new camera system, which comes as a single lens on the S9 and a dual camera on the S9+. The devices also have a Super Slow Motion feature, which moves from 260 frames per second to 960 frames per second.

The S9 has a dual aperture camera. And, the F1.5 wide aperture for dark photos is the widest aperture in a smartphone. The Galaxy S9 and S9+ work with the same Gear VR that launched alongside the Note 8, as well as Google’s Daydream View headset. The brightness has also been boosted. Both phones will have stereo speakers.


Nokia

HMD Global introduced new devices at Mobile World Congress, including Nokia 6 (2018), Nokia 7 Plus, Nokia 8 Sirocco, Nokia 8810, and Nokia 1.

Nokia 6 (2018)

The smartphone features a 5.5-inch display and features ‘damage-resistant’ Corning Gorilla Glass. It is powered by a Snapdragon 630 processor, paired with 3GB of RAM along with 32GB internal storage. Additionally, another variant sporting 4GB of RAM and 64GB internal storage will be coming soon.

The new Nokia 6 features Android One. Running Android Oreo out-of-the-box, the smartphone comes equipped with a 16MP rear camera along with an 8MP front-facing camera. It is backed by a 3,000mAh battery. It also includes wireless charging. It will be available in Black/Copper, White/Iron and Blue/Gold, color variants. The new Nokia 6 will ship in early April for 279 EUR. (approximately Rs 22,200).

Nokia 7 Plus

The new Nokia 7 Plus features a 6-inch screen along with an aspect ratio of 18:9 and comes in an aluminum unibody. It is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 processor, paired with 4GB of RAM. It includes an internal storage of 64GB, which can be further expanded up to 256GB via microSD card.

It comes equipped with a dual camera setup. It includes a 12MP rear camera with an f/1.75 aperture along with a 13MP camera with an f/2.6 aperture. It also includes a 16MP front-facing camera along with an f/2.0 aperture. Connectivity features include 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth v5.0 and a 3.5mm audio jack. A 3800mAh battery completes the package. The smartphone will be priced at 399 EUR. (approximately Rs 31,750).                               

Nokia 8 Sirocco

It features a 5.5-inch edge-to-edge 2K resolution display along with Corning Gorilla Glass 5 for protection. It is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor, paired with 6GB RAM. It includes an internal storage of 128GB.  Running Android Oreo out-of-the-box, as a part of Google’s Android One, it is equipped with a dual-camera setup which comprises of a 12MP rear camera along with a 13MP telephoto for 2x optical zoom. It also packs in a 5MP front-facing camera. A 3260 mAh battery completes the package. It also supports Qi wireless charging and fast charging that promises 50 percent in 30 minutes. It is priced at 799 EUR (approximately Rs 63,500).

Nokia 1

It features a 4.5-inch FWVGA IPS display. It is powered by a 1.1GHz quad-core MediaTek processor, paired with 1GB of RAM. It includes a 5MP rear camera along with a 2MP camera. It includes an internal storage of 8GB which can be further expanded up to 128GB via microSD card. It is backed up a 2150mAh battery and is rated to deliver up to 9 hours of talk time and up to 15 days of standby time.

Nokia 8810

The Nokia 8810 4G phone features a 2.4-inch QVGA display. It is powered by the Qualcomm 205 processor, paired with 512MB RAM. It includes an internal storage of 4GB. It comes equipped with a 2MP rear camera. Connectivity features WiFi, micro USB and a 3.5-mm jack. It is backed by a 1500mAh battery. It also features Smart Feature OS and has a built-in FM radio.


Sony

Sony has unveiled two new smartphones today during Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, namely the Xperia XZ2 and Xperia XZ2 Compact. Both devices are an upgrade over the Xperia XZ1 and Xperia XZ1 Compact.

In terms of specifications, the Xperia XZ2 sports a 5.7-inch full HD plus display with an aspect ratio of 18:9. It is powered by an Octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor, paired with 4GB of RAM. It includes an internal storage of 64GB, which can be further expanded up to 400GB via microSD card.

Running Android Oreo with Sony Xperia UI on top, it comes equipped with a 19MP rear camera with f/2.0 aperture, LED flash, PDAF and laser autofocus and 4K HDR video recording. It also includes a 5MP front-facing camera. Connectivity features include WiFi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5.0 and USB Type-C. A 3180Ah battery completes the package. It also includes wireless charging.

On the other hand, the Xperia XZ1 Compact sports a 5-inch Full HD+ display with a 2160 x 1440 pixels resolution. It is powered by an Octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor, paired with 4GB of RAM. It includes an internal storage of 64GB, which can be further expanded via microSD card.

It comes equipped with a 19MP rear camera with f/2.0 aperture, LED flash, PDAF and laser autofocus and 4K HDR video recording. It also features a 5MP front-facing camera with f/2.2 aperture. Connectivity features include WiFi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5.0 and USB Type-C. A 2,870mAh battery completes the package.
