Until now, Garmin devices used two measurements to analyze users' sleep -- movement and heart rate. The new update that rolled out June 14, will now also factor in additional data, such as heart rate variability, to provide more accurate readings about each sleep stage, including REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep.
The brand believes adults should aim for 7-9 hours of sleep per night in order to improve health, mood and overall well-being. Therefore using Garmin Connect, the new advanced sleep monitoring can provide information that determines if users are successfully achieving the ideal amount of sleep, as well as how long someone is in light, deep and now REM sleep. It also notes that if a user's readings show less deep sleep than before updating, it's likely down to more accurate readings rather than an actual change in sleeping habits.
The new feature is compatible with the following Garmin devices: vivoactive 3, Forerunner 645, Forerunner 935, vivosport, vivosmart 3, vivomove HR, vivoactive 3 Music and Forerunner 645 Music. Other devices, such as fenix 5, will be getting the update in the future.
The vivoactive 3 Music is the latest wearable from the company, announced on June 13 as a “a GPS smartwatch with integrated music that lets users bring along their favorite tunes to every workout or activity.” The on-device music storage can support up to 500 songs, either directly transferred from personal computers or by downloading offline music playlists from select streaming services. The device also features Garmin Pay, which means runners can leave their wallets and smartphones at home and not only enjoy music but also stop and buy a coffee.
The devices sells for a recommended retail price of US$299.99 with a black silicone 20mm quick release industry standard band.
