Apple is reportedly working a new foldable iPhone, which might be unveiled in 2020. Bank of America Merrill Lynch has stated that the smartphone maker is working with its Asian partners on a foldable device which will be able to open up and be used like an iPad tablet.

According to report by CNBC, analyst Wamsi Mohan said, “We expect the iPhones this fall to be largely unchanged for the OLED versions although size changes have proved to be a catalyst in the past. Our checks also suggest that Apple is working with suppliers on a foldable phone (that potentially could double up as a tablet) for launch in 2020.”

It should be noted that this isn’t the first time that rumours regarding a foldable device have surfaced online. Previously, reports suggested that Apple was working with LG Display to build a foldable iPhone. Apple has also filed a patent last year in which the company proposed to make an iPhone which can open and close like a book.

Recently, reports stated that the company was reportedly designing and producing its own displays in a secret manufacturing facility near its California headquarters. According to a report by Bloomberg, the tech giant is making a significant investment in the development of next-generation microLED screens.

Unlike current OLED screens, the new screens will use different light-emitting compounds, which will make future gadgets, ‘slimmer, brighter and less power-hungry.’

At the moment, the iPhone X is Apple’s first phone which uses an OLED display. According to previous reports, Apple had placed an order for 70 million displays from Samsung for use in the iPhone 8.

The company is also rumoured to most likely bring back the LCD display with a metallic case on an iPhone, just like the iPhones launched before the iPhone 8 and iPhone X. Citing sources familiar with Apple's plans, a report by Nikkei points out that the 6.1-inch LCD model will probably sport a metal back [like older iPhones] available in several colors, adding that the other two OLED handsets will come in two sizes: one about 6.3 inches long and the other 5.8 inches.

These rumours fall in line with predictions from noted KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo who stated that Apple would launch three iPhones in 2018, out of which one would be a TFT-LCD model, which would be the most affordable iPhone from the group. This model may start around $649 to $749 (approximately Rs 42,500 to Rs 49,000) which is around the same price range of an iPhone 8.
