The 2018 iPhone might finally solve an important issue – battery life. The iPhone 8 and iPhone X successor are said to come with a brand new power management chips which might be the “most advanced in the industry”.

According to a report by Nikkei, the company is currently designing its own main power management chips for use in iPhones as early as in 2018. Up until now, British company Dialog Semiconductor has been designing the main power management chip for iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch models.

Apple reportedly wants to cut dependence on suppliers to boost its semiconductor capabilities. The main power management chip controls an iPhone's battery, including charging capabilities and energy consumption. Additionally, these chips are one of the most crucial and expensive components after core processors, modems and memory chips respectively.

With the company’s in-house version, future iPhone models may have better battery life and improve performance as well. Such new chips will be solely manufactured by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. TSMC has been Apple's sole supplier manufacturing core processor chips for iPhones since 2016.

The report states that though Apple is indeed developing its own power management chip for iPhones, the time frame is “less certain” and could be delayed to 2019.

According to a previous report, Apple may launch three new iPhones in 2018, which are likely to sport an iPhone X-like design.  According to KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, all three models will be equipped with a full-screen notched design and TrueDepth camera system like the iPhone X. The iPhones could be available in three different sizes - a 5.8-inch phone with an OLED display, a 6.5-inch phone with an OLED display and a 6.1-inch phone with an LCD display respectively.

While the first two devices will cater to the high-end market, the new TFT-LCD model might be the most affordable iPhone from the group. This model may start around $649 to $749 (approximately Rs 42,500 to Rs 49,000) which is around the same price range of an iPhone 8.

Kuo has also added that the shipments momentum of all three new iPhone models will be upbeat and expects them to launch without any delays in 2018. The report added that Kuo’s research note did not outline any pricing estimates for the next 5.8-inch iPhone X, which currently starts at $999, or the all-new 6.5-inch model.
