The footballing world has been rocked by the news of Indonesian goal-keeper Choirul Huda passing away after a mid-game collision.

The tragic incident happened during the first-half of a match between Persela Lamongan and Semen Pedang.

Huda, a legendary figure in Lamongan, ran out of his line to block the ball when he collided with team-mate Ramon Rodrigues and Pedang attacker Marcel Sacramento.

The 38-year-old looked in tremendous pain immediately and soon went unconscious as ground staff stretchered him off in a hurry.

"All of the players finished the game and went to the hospital, where it was announced that Choirul Huda had died. The loss of Choirul Huda has hit us all hard. We did not have time to a see a doctor, only to see his body," Persela coach Aji Santoso was quoted as saying in a report by goal.com.

Dr Zaki Mubarok, of the Dr Soegiri Lamongan General Hospital, later confirmed the cause of the death: "He passed away because collision in the head and behind the neck."

Huda spent his entire playing career with Persela. A home-town boy, he made his debut in 1999 and was a regular throughout his time with the club.
