Ponte Preta has been relegated from the Brazilian football championship after losing against Vitoria. The match was abandoned with eight minutes remaining on Sunday when Ponte fans invaded the pitch after their side went 3-2 behind.

However, it was not the biggest talking point of the match- Ponte Preta has one of its players sent off for putting his finger where it didn’t belong.

Defender Rodrigo was sent off in the 19th minute for putting finger in the opponent’s buttocks.

Referee Ricardo Marques Ribeiro said in his match report: “I sent off … Rodrigo … after I was informed by the fourth official that the athlete had introduced his middle finger twice between the buttocks of his adversary number 22, Santiago Trellez.”

Rodrigo had to be convinced by teammates to leave the pitch after refusing Ricardo, according to the ref.

At the time, Ponte Preta were leading Vitoria 2-0. By fulltime, Vitoria won 3-2, and Ponte Preta had to endure the wrath of local fans.

Ponte fans in the 13,000 sell-out crowd tore down parts of the wire fencing and charged on to the pitch, with angry supporters surrounding goalkeeper Aranha.

Most of the other players ran from the field and, although the referee waited almost an hour in the hope of restarting the game, officials ruled that the players' safety could not be guaranteed and abandoned the match.
