Chelsea has roped in Thomas Tuchel as the manager of the club after the unceremonious sacking of Frank Lampard. The former Chelsea star was sacked after a poor run of results saw the club drop from first place in the Premier League table to ninth in the space of a month. The appointment of Thomas Tuchel comes at a time when he has been out of work since December 2020 following his stint with Paris Saint-Germain. During his stint with Paris Saint-Germain, Thomas Tuchel helped Paris Saint Germain win the Ligue 1 and then capped off another successful run with a domestic treble in 2019. In 2020, Thomas Tuchel was part of the team that saw them reach the final of the UEFA Champions League where they were defeated by Bayern Munich.

The sacking of Frank Lampard has found support from Liverpool great and current Rangers coach Steven Gerrard who said that Chelsea should have given him more time. "I did think it was an opportunity for Chelsea to really reach out and support him during this tough period rather than do what they have done. But Chelsea has got history for that so it was no surprise," Gerrard told reporters. In his first season at charge, Frank Lampard helped Chelsea win the FA Cup and he also guided them to the fourth spot in the Premier League.

Who is Thomas Tuchel?

Thomas Tuchel's playing career ended at age 25, as a result of a chronic knee cartilage injury, and in 2000, he began his coaching career, working for the youth teams at VfB Stuttgart for five years. In 2009, following a successful one-year period at FC Augsburg II, he was hired by the newly-promoted Bundesliga club Mainz 05. Tuchel guided Mainz to league stability during his five seasons at the club and gained plaudits for his brand of energetic, attacking football. He also cultivated a reputation for having a focus on promoting youth players.

Thomas Tuchel departed Mainz in 2014 as a result of financial disputes, and in 2015, was appointed at fellow Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund, where he won the DFB-Pokal before being dismissed in 2017. At Paris Saint-Germain, Tuchel primarily played a 4–3–3 with plenty of flair to emphasize the attacking capabilities of wide forwards Neymar and Kylian Mbappe.
