India managed a 2-0 win over Nepal in an international football friendly.
On Tuesday, Indian football captain Sunil Chhetri scored his 43rd goal to overtake Bhaichung Bhutia as the country's top goal scorer.
In the match against Nepal which India won with ease 2-0; Chhetri scored during the first half in the 21st minute.
Bhaichung Bhutia was in the stands watching the match and witnessed his record being usurped by 29-year-old. Bhutia came down to the pitch after the match and congratulated Chhetri with a hug showing the rapport between the two men who have done Indian football proud.
In cricket-loving India football which is known as the game the world plays hasn't received the backing that cricket which is equated to a religion has managed to get. Nonetheless, Chhetri who played for the Kansas City Wizards of Major League Soccer in 2010 has time on his hand to further this record.
On the list of top goal scorers for India, IM Vijayan is third with 40 goals, Shabbir Ali with 23 goals is fourth and PK Banerjee with 19 goals rounds up the top 5 lead by Chhetri and Bhutia.
Hopefully, the records tumbling and the last few years as far as football in India goes has been a moment to be proud of producing once in a generation football stars like Sunil Chhetri and Bhaichung Bhutia.
The beautiful game can hope to move out of Goa and West Bengal where the passion soars to the rest of India as more people get passionate and interested in the game the world plays and hopefully in the World Cups to come India will manage to make the cut and break into the top 100.
Nonetheless, it is a moment of great pride for Sunil Chhetri as he and Clifford Miranda who scored the second goal helped, avenge India's 1-2 defeat against Nepal in the SAFF Championships.
