Manchester United suffered their first defeat of the Premier League season with a shock 2-1 loss at promoted Huddersfield Town on Saturday, while title-rivals Manchester City maintained their perfect start of the season with 3-0 win against Burnley.

The loss left United trailing City by five points in the Premier League table after 9 matches.

Huddersfield took the lead in the 28th minute when Australian midfielder Aaron Mooy robbed Juan Mata in midfield, broke forward, slipped the ball to Tom Ince and then fired home after Ince's shot was blocked by David De Gea.

United lost defender Phil Jones to injury and his replacement Victor Lindelof was to blame for Huddersfield's second when he completely misjudged a long clearance from keeper Jonas Lossl, allowing Belgian Laurent Depoitre to round De Gea and slot home.

Jose Mourinho's side pulled one back with 12 minutes remaining, Marcus Rashford meeting a Romelu Lukaku cross with a firm header at the back post but despite late pressure the Yorkshire side held on for a famous victory.

Aguero equals City's scoring record

At the Etihad, Sergio Aguero's record-equalling strike set City on their way to a 3-0 win over Burnley.

City were not at their all-action best early on as Burnley looked comfortable at the back, but the game turned on a penalty decision that incensed the visitors when Bernardo Silva was adjudged to have been brought down by Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope just before the half hour.

Aguero stepped up to score the goal that moved him level with Eric Brook on 177 City goals, before a 73rd-minute Nicolas Otamendi header and a smart Leroy Sane finish made sure of victory in the Manchester rain.

Newcastle, Leicester and Bournemouth score important wins

In other matches on Saturday, Federico Fernandez's own goal and a second-half strike by Shinji Okazaki gave Leicester City caretaker manager Michael Appleton a much-needed 2-1 win away to Swansea City in his first game in charge. The Foxes moved out of the bottom three with this victory.

A late header by substitute Mikel Merino gave Newcastle a 1-0 home win over bottom team Crystal Palace in a scrappy Premier League clash at St James's Park on Saturday.

Merino made a run into the box and powered home an inviting Matt Ritchie corner to settle a scrappy game littered with fouls and there were few chances at either end.

Bournemouth earned a much-needed win that leaves struggling Stoke just a point above them in the Premier League's bottom three.

Andrew Surman scored the first from 20 yards while Junior Stanislas sent one home from the penalty spot to get Bournemouth up 2-0 after just 18 minutes.

Stoke dominated the second half and got a goal back when Mame Biram Diouf found the net, but they were unable to break the away side down again.

Earlier in the day, Cesar Azpilicueta and Michy Batshuayi scored late in the second half as champions Chelsea snatched a 4-2 victory against Watford.
