Network Ten sports presenter Mel McLaughlin faced fresh controversy when she mistakenly referred to Mark Waugh as Damien Fleming, and then apologised to him by saying she'd buy him a drink.  Immediately, Twitter was flooded with users claiming McLaughlin had 'double standards'. Some even called for her to be fined.

Melbourne Renegades opener Gayle had sparked the first great sporting Twitter meltdown of 2016, propositioning Channel 10 Big Bash League presenter Mel McLaughlin live on air but here is how the TV presenter got a taste of her own medicine.

Gayle had just been dismissed for a dazzling 41 off 15 balls in the Renegades comfortable win over Hobart, and was being interviewed by McLaughlin at the side of Bellerive Oval. But after being complemented on his aggressive batting, Gayle – renowned in cricket circles as something of a ladies man – turned his sights firmly on McLaughlin.

"I wanted to come and have an interview with you as well, that's why I'm here – just to see your eyes for the first time," Gayle told McLaughlin, who looked embarrassed by the ordeal. "Hopefully we can win this game and we can have a drink after, don't blush baby," he said before dissolving into laughter.

McLaughlin, who appeared uncomfortable as a result of Gayle's remarks, said 'I'm not blushing', as she attempted to continue with the interview. After being asked about an injury he suffered, Gayle said he hoped to stay on the field for the remainder of the series, before adding: 'hopefully I can recover and look in your eyes.'

Shortly after the incident, Big Bash League Anthony Everard chief executive released a statement on Twitter. 'I heard Chris' comments and they're disrespectful and simply inappropriate. We'll certainly be talking to him and the Renegades about it. This league is all about its appeal to kids, families and females. 'There's just no place in the BBL — or, for that matter, cricket anywhere — for that sort of behaviour.'
