In a shocking incident, senior officials and workers of century-old Mohun Bagan club were involved in ugly war of words which later morphed to literal fist fights during annual general meeting in Kolkata on Saturday. Mohun Bagan known for its long footballing heritage has been riddled with infighting in recent times. However, things went out of hands yesterday when in full glare of commoners, senior club officials lost their cool.

In the annual general meeting, held at club tent, nearly 1100 people were present, which is a record in itself. All top officials including Club President Tutu Basu and Secrtetary Anjan Mitra were present. Normally, a president is selected during these meetings who conduct the entire proceedings. Despite Tutu Basu's presence, his name wasn't announced as the President to run the meeting. This lead to war of words and people losing their cool with both supporters from Anjan and Tutu faction getting hostile. Former Indian goalkeeper and Anjan Mitra's relative Kalyan Chaubey was manhandled in the stage. Multiple people present on the stage started speaking at the same time, thus adding to the commotion. In the meantime, Anjan fell ill amidst all the ruckus.

When Anjan Mitra got a chance to speak, he expressed regret saying that the club is badly divided and it is a matter of great shame. He also said that in his long administrative career, nothing of this sort has happened before. Even when he was speaking, Anjan's daughter Sohini and Tutu Basu's son Srinjoy were involved in a verbal altercation, as per reports. Finally after a free for all session for nearly forty minutes, Tutu Basu was announced as the Presiding officer of the meeting and the AGM finally started.

Later speaking to the media, Tutu Basu though tried to play down the incident saying even MPs fight in Parliament. He promised to ensure that elections are held speedily. On his part, Kalyan Chaubey has filed a police complaint against those who attacked him. He is still in a state of shock.

In the meeting, most members strongly advocated that Mohun Bagan should take part in Indian Super League (ISL). Currently Mohun Bagan and East Bengal are playing I-league, even though another Indian football giant BFC have joined the glitzy ISL.
