Belgian forward Romelu Lukaku was racially abused by Cagliari fans during Inter Milan's 2-1 away victory on Sunday in Serie A.

The match was level at 1-1 when Inter won a penalty in the 70th minute. Lukaku stepped up to take the pen but was subject to monkey noises by the home fans to put him off.

The 26-year-old found the back of the net from the spot and handed his side the lead and instead of celebrating his goal he stared into the stands in the direction of the chants.

This is not the first time that a player has been racially abused by the Cagliari fans. Previously, former Juve forward Moise Kean also faced racist chats against him when he scored for his side against the home side last season.

Lukaku on Monday released an official statement stating what the football federation needs to do to keep the game clean, fair and enjoyable for everyone.

The statement read, "Many players in the last month have suffered from racial abuse.. I did yesterday too. Football is a game to be enjoyed by everyone and we shouldn't accept any form of discrimination that will put our game in shame. I hope the football federation all over the world react strongly on all cases of discrimination!!!"

"Social media platforms ( Instagram, twitter, facebook...) need to work better as well with football clubs because every day you see at least a racist comment under a post of a person of colour..."

"We've been saying it for years and still no action... Ladies and gentlemen it's 2019 instead of going forward we're going backward and I think as players we need to unify and make a statement on this matter to keep this game clean and enjoyable for everyone," he added.

After the match, Inter manager Antonio Conté clarified that at the time he did not hear any of those noises from his position but, "In Italy, we must improve a lot and be more educated and respectful towards those doing their job."

"In other countries, you support the team; you don't insult the opposition like this," Conte added.

"There must be maximum respect. Today I was treated well and wasn't insulted, other times it hasn't happened like that and it's not nice."

Earlier this season, Lukaku's former Manchester United teammate Paul Pogba and Chelsea teammate Kurt Zouma also faced racial abuse on social media.

Both UEFA and FIFA are taking racism in football more seriously than ever before and a thorough investigation is expected down the line by the governing body.

Lukaku joined Inter Milan for a reported fee of 74 million pounds from Manchester United just two seasons after signing for the Red Devils from Everton.
