Three of the coaches announced in this season's Indian Super League have strong Manchester United connections.
On Friday, a host of Indian Super League teams announced their new coaches ahead of the season. There was a distinct Manchester United flavour as three of the coaches announced had announced had connections with red half of Manchester.
Former Man Utd first-team coach Rene Meulensteen was announced as the head coach of Kerala Blasters. Meanwhile, Teddy Sheringham immortalised for his injury-time goal to win the Champions League for Man Utd in 1999 was announced as the coach of Atletico De Kolkata.
Also, former Manchester United winger and Man City coach Steve Coppell was announced as the joint coach of Jamshedpur FC along with Ahmed Ishfaq.
Two-time ISL champions Atletico de Kolkata today announced the appointment of former Manchester United and England striker Teddy Sheringham as their new coach for the upcoming ISL season.
Sanjiv Goenka, Chairman RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group, Principal Owner ATK announced the signing of Sheringham who has played for the likes of Manchester United, West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur with distinction.
He also donned the England jersey 51 times between 1993 and 2002.
"I am glad to welcome our new coach Teddy Sheringham to ATK family and strongly believe that it is going to be an enriching experience for him and the boys. Our endeavour to retain expertise and map out a compact team structure has been enhanced with Sheringham joining the team this season," Goenka said.
"One of the top goal scorers and an exceptional player himself I am hopeful Teddy will bring his fine planning skills to lead the way for ATK," he said in a statement.
Sheringham said, "I am excited to be joining ATK and can't wait to get started. Sanjiv Goenka has told me about the Indian Super League and it seems like a great place to follow your football dreams and ambitions."
Indian Super League side Jamshedpur Football Club announced the signing of Englishman Steve Coppell as their head coach for the upcoming ISL season.
The former Manchester United star and England international joined the Jamshedpur-based franchise after a successful stint with Kerala Blasters.
Under Coppell, a former Manchester City manager, Kerala Blaster finished runners-up last year.
Tata Steel also announced the signing of former India player Ishfaq Ahmed as the assistant coach of the franchise.
Ishfaq has also been working with Kerala Blasters for the last two years as an assistant coach.
"Tata Steel has a long and enduring commitment to sports, especially football. Our foray into ISL is in line with the commitment to develop Indian football. Jamshedpur Football Club's association with Steve Coppell and Ishfaq Ahmed is yet another step in this direction," T V Narendran, Managing Director, Tata Steel India & South-East Asia, said.
Alexandre Guimaraes has been re-appointed as the head coach of Mumbai City FC for the fourth edition of the Indian Super League (ISL) scheduled to start in November this year.
Guimaraes led Mumbai City FC to top the group standings at the end of the league stage in ISL last year.
He helped the club reach its maiden semi-final where it succumbed to the eventual league winner Atletico de Kolkata, in a closely fought semi-final in December last year, a media release said today.
The 57-year-old Costa Rican retired footballer represented his country in the 1990 FIFA World Cup. He is best known for his achievements as the head coach of the Costa Rica national squad, leading them past the qualifying stages for the 2002 and the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
Alexandre Henrique Borges Guimaraes started coaching Belen and then moved to Herediano in summer 1996, where he achieved good results with both teams.
He was hired by Saprissa, where he worked for several years, winning three national tournaments with them.
Guimaraes has also coached several international teams, such as Comunicaciones of Guatemala, Irapuato and Dorados de Sinaloa in Mexico and tasted success with teams like Al Wasl in UAE & Tiajin Teda in China, the release said.
"We achieved some of the objectives last year by finishing top of the table and reaching the semi-finals but I'd like to continue this project and finish the job I came here for," Guimaraes said.
