Sunil Chhetri will have a chance to overtake Lionel Messi in terms of international goals as India take on Kenya in the final of Intercontinental Cup 2018 at the Mumbai Sports Arena on Sunday.

Indian captain Sunil Chhetri needs only 2 goals to equal Messi’s count of international goals. Chhetri has scored a brace in the league stage match against Kenya. A similar performance will see him go equal to Messi's tally of 64 goals. If he scores a hat-trick, like he did in the tournament opener against Chinese Taipei, he will surpass Messi to become the second highest active goal scorer in international football.

Chhetri will be next only to Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo leads the tally with 81 goals of 124 matches. Chhetri has one the best goals per match ratio (0.61) among the leading international goalscorers. While Ronaldo scores with a rate of 0.54 goals per match, Messi's goals per match ratio is 0.52.

Messi currently has 64 goals (124 games) for Argentina. The Argentine talisman will lead his nation in the 2018 World Cup. However, Chhetri may overtake him in the goal-scoring list before that.

Player Country Goals
Cristiano Ronaldo Portugal 81
Lionel Messi Argentina 64
Sunil Chhetri India 62
David Villa Spain 59
Clint Dempsey USA 57

If one looks at Sunil Chhetri’s recent form, it is not so unlikely that he would equal Messi’s record, or even break it. In the three matches of Intercontinental Cup, Sunil Chhetri has scored 6 goals.
