India at CWG 2018, Day 6: Heena Sidhu adds another Shooting gold; Boxers, hockey teams enter semifinals

India ended with 21 medals at the end of day 6 of the Commonwealth Games including 11 gold, 4 silver and 6 bronze medals.

Heena Sidhu picked up India's third gold medal in shooting at the ongoing Commonwealth Games (CWG 2018), finishing on top in the women's 25m pistol event and also breaking the Games record in the process in Gold Coast, Australia, on Tuesday.

This was India's 11th gold and 20th medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Later in the day India added another medal to its tally with Para Powerlifter Sachin Chaudhary winning India's sixth bronze medal at the games.

India ended with 21 medals at the end of day 6 of the Commonwealth Games including 11 gold, 4 silver and 6 bronze medals. 

Though, India earned only medals on the day it was good for India overall with five boxers advancing to the semifinal stage as well as India entering the last four in both men and women hockey.

Sidhu gets her second medal

The 28-year-old Sidhu shot a final score of 38, two of them perfect fives, to claim the top honours ahead of Australian Elena Galiabovitch. This was her second medal at the 21st Games after having claimed the silver in the 10m air pistol event behind 16-year-old compatriot Manu Bhaker.

Earlier, defending silver-medallist Gagan Narang signed off a disappointing seventh while debutant Chain Singh finished fourth in the 50m rifle prone event at the Belmont Shooting Centre. Narang, who qualified third for the final with a score of 619.4, went out after the first stage of elimination.

Sachin-Sachin 

Sachin Chaudhary won India's sixth bronze medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in  Para Powerlifting on Tuesday. Chaudhary lifted 201kg to total 181 points to finish third in the event.

It was India's first medal in para-sports at CWG 2018. 

India's Farman Basha finished fifth in the men's Lightweight category of the Para Powerlifting competition. Ashok, the second Indian in the fray, finished last in the field of 11 competitors as he could not manage a single successful attempt.

Boxers ensure 5 more medals 

Amit Panghal (49kg), Naman Tanwar (91kg), Mohammed Hussamuddin (56kg), Manoj Kumar (69kg) and  Satish Kumar (91+kgn) assured themselves of Commonwealth Games medals after advancing to the semifinals in their respective categories on Tuesday.

Veteran Manoj Kumar (69kg) assured himself the second Commonwealth Games medal of his career as all five Indian boxers entered the semifinals of the mega-event with contrasting victories in the quarterfinals. Debutants Amit Panghal (49kg), Mohammed Hussamuddin (56kg), Naman Tanwar (91kg) and Satish kumar (+91kg) joined Manoj in the semifinals of the mega-event, where Indian boxers had won three silver and a bronze medal the last time around.

India remain in hunt in Hockey

India's men and women hockey teams entered the Commonwealth Games semifinals after beating their opponents on Tuesday. 

Indian men huffed and puffed into the semifinals after beating lower-ranked Malaysia 2-1 in a draining Pool B encounter on Tuesday. Indian women also made it to the last four with a 1-0 win against South Africa.

Anas misses medal, Hina gets into final

Muhammad Anas shattered the national record for a third time but missed out on a 400m men's medal while Hima Das qualified for the women's final in the same event with a personal best on a bitter-sweet day for Indian track and field athletes at the Commonwealth Games.

Anas after clocking a personal best of 45.31sec to finish fourth in the race, improving his personal best by 0.01 second. 

It was first time that an Indian was competing in the 400m final at the CWG since the legendary Milkha Singh in 1958.

However, Anas' effort was not enough for a medal, falling short by just 0.2 seconds, finishing behind winner Isaac Makwala (44.35), Baboloki Thebe (45.09) and Javon Francis (45.11).

In the women's 400m women's semifinals, the 18-year-old Hima qualified for the final with a personal best of 51.53.

She had finished third in her semifinal, taking off 0.44 off her previous personal best, but eventually made the cut as the seventh fastest among eight finalists.

Das had stunned everyone by qualifying for the CWG and the imposing runner has continued a good run.

Doubles joy in Badminton and Squash 

India's mixed doubles pair of Ashwini Ponnappa and Satwik Rankireddy claimed a straight-game win over Guernsey's Stuart Hardy and Chloe Le Tissier to make a resounding start to their campaign in the individual badminton events of the Commonwealth Games.

Ashwini and Satwik, who had given India a positive start in the historic mixed team final against Malaysia yesterday, brushed aside Stuart and Chloe Le 21-9 21-5 in the opening match that lasted just 22 minutes here.

In Squash, Defending champions Joshna Chinappa and Dipika Pallikal shrugged off the opening game lapse to thrash Pakistan 2-1 in their opening Group stage match at the Commonwealth Games on Tuesday.

In the first match of the day, the 2014 winners beat Pakistan's Fazia Zafar and Madina Zafar 10-11 11-0-11-1.
