Luka Modric pipped Cristiano Ronaldo and Mohamed Salah to win the world's best men's player at The Best FIFA Football Awards 2018.
Modric ended the 10-year reign of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo with his win after getting 29.05 per cent of the vote. Either Messi or Ronaldo has won the award since 2007.
According to Daily Mirror, Modric came in ahead of Ronaldo (19 per cent), Mohamed Salah (11.2 per cent), Kylian Mbappe (10 per cent) and Messi (9 per cent).
The winner was decided by a process in which captains and managers of nations from around the world were asked to pick three players for the award with the first choice getting 5 points followed by 3 points for second and 1 point for the third choice.
Modric himself voted his Real Madrid teammate Raphael Varane as his top pick followed by Ronaldo and Antoine Griezmann.
Ronaldo also voted for Varane with Griezmann at third, with his second place vote going to the Croatian star Modric.
Modric was voted as the best player by Lionel Messi and India's Sunil Chhetri.
Salah was not eligible to vote as he is not the international captain for Egypt. His international captain El Hadary Essam voted for him in first place and selected Modric and Ronaldo in second and third respectively.
Messi, who finished outside the top three for the first time since 2006, handed a nomination to arch-rival Ronaldo as third on his personal list. He placed Kylian Mbappe at the number two.
According to India.com, Indian football captain Sunil Chhetri nominated Modric for the award besides selecting Mbappe (second) and De Bruyne (third).
England captain Harry Kane nominated the Portuguese star. He also selected Messi (second) and fellow Premier League star Kevin De Bruyne (third).
