Football's world governing body FIFA have released their shortlist for its end-of-year awards, with Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo, Barcelona's Lionel Messi and Paris Saint-Germain's Neymar in race for the men's best player award.

Ronaldo is the current holder of the title, while Messi also made the shortlist last year. The winners will be crowned in a ceremony on October 23.

It's only the second time FIFA will award the title to a player, with FIFA previously working alongside France Football to award the Ballon d'Or as the main award.

Ronaldo is the favourite to win the award, having led Real Madrid to the La Liga title and a third Champions League success in four years last season.

Ronaldo previously won the FIFA World Player of the Year award in 2008 and is a four-time winner of the Ballon d'Or.

Messi, 30, scored 54 goals last season as Barcelona won the Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup.

The Argentina great, a record five-time winner of the Ballon d'Or, has made a superb start to the current campaign, scoring 12 goals in his first eight appearances in all competitions.

Real Madrid's Zinedine Zidane is the favourite to win the coaching award. He is nominated alongside Massimo Allegri of Juventus and Antonio Conte of Chelsea.

Carli Lloyd of the Houston Dash is competing with Rosengard's Lieke Martens and Santa Clarita Blue Heat's Deyna Castellanos to get the honour of the best female player of the year.

Other awards include the selection of the best goalkeeper―with Juve's Gianluigi Buffon, Real's Keylor Navas and Bayern Munich's Manuel Neuer nominated―and the Puskas Award for best goal scored.

The voting for the award, equally weighted between national team captains, national team coaches, media and fans, closed earlier this month.
