“That’s fantastic by our shooters today (Friday),” she said before leaving the range. “I’m especially happy when the team makes world record. It speaks volumes about our preparation and speaks for the whole team.
“What makes it even more special is that currently, the Indian junior men and women hold the team world records. This makes my appointment as high performance coach (early this year) truly meaningful,” she said with a chuckle.
“Elavenil’s 631 in the qualification was fantastic. Shreya’s 628.5 was her personal best. But the final is a different ballgame. It starts with zero. Elavenil had two bad shots but recovered well to finish with silver,” Shirur said.
Talking about Hazarika’s tense final, Shirur said: “Hriday did not shoot well in mixed team (two days ago). The kids need a lot of counselling and constant encouragement to regroup and get their confidence back. They are kids in age but in technique and performance, they need constant guidance as they look for support even when competing. The shot he took in the shoot-off was phenomenal. “He learnt to handle his nerves well. Initially he was shaky. But, once he finished with 106.4 in Series 6 of the qualification round, he learnt to hold his nerves well, and that helped him in the final.”
With a remarkable day by the junior shooters, Shirur has let the marksmen enjoy the evening to celebrate their achievements. “They want to eat whatever they want to. They get a little freedom to eat on this day,” said Shirur.
