The Commonwealth Games at Gold Coast Queensland have been good for India. So far, they have won 19 medals – 10 of them being gold.

On Monday, the Indian badminton players created history by winning the Badminton Mixed Team gold by beating Malaysia 3-1 in the finals. The rout began with Ashwini Ponappa and Satwik Rankireddy defeating the Malaysian mixed doubles pair. Then Kidambi Srikanth, who had never won a match against badminton legend Lee Chon Wei, stunned him in straight games. Malaysia came back to give themselves a chance at 2-1 when Saina Nehwal came to play, and clinch the gold for India in a three-game thriller.

While Twitter hailed the performance, India vice president Venkaiah Naidu ended up making an error, which was caught by Twitter. Although he meant well, Naidu assumed that each player won a medal each. “Hearty Congratulations to Indian Badminton team for winning three Gold Medals at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games, today. @P9Ashwini-@satwiksairaj claimed mixed doubles title, @srikidambi and @NSaina clinched men's and women's singles titles respectively (sic),” Naidu tweeted.

After criticism and jokes, the vice president deleted the tweet later, but several people managed to take screenshots of it.

Earlier on Day 5, in the overall medals tally, India jumped to third spot with 10 gold, four silver and five bronze medals after another fruitful day across sports, which fetched three gold, two silver and a bronze.

Jitu started the gold rush today in the 10m air pistol event, shrugging off a weak qualifying round to shatter the Games record with a score of 235.1 in the final.

India swept the table tennis team events of the Commonwealth Games as the men matched the women to seal a memorable gold with an emphatic 3-0 win over Nigeria in the final on Monday.

It is the first time since the racket sport's induction into the Commonwealth Games program that India has topped both categories.
