Industrialist Anand Mahindra on Friday shared a tweet that has hailed how authorities and public figures have gone out of their way to fund athletes, and this has resulted in a spike in medals.
Mahindra was referring to Hima Das, who became the first Indian track and field athlete to win a gold medal on a global scale at the U-20 Athletics Championships in Finland.
"Decades ago,all of a sudden, young Chinese athletes started making their mark on the world stage. Yes of course it was due to state intervention. But also because of a growing economy & popular aspirations for sporting heroes. Should we believe that moment has arrived in India?"

18-year-old Das, a pre-tournament favourite, clocked 51.46s to win the gold, which triggered a wild celebration at the Indian camp. This was though not her personal best as she had clocked 51.13 last month in Guwahti at the National Inter-State Championships.
"Thank so much for your love and support. I am happy that I could bring gold for my country and I will try my level best to bring more medals and to do more achievements for my country in the coming days. Keep supporting," Das tweeted after her win.

Soon after, praise came from all over India, with actors, athletes and politicians coming together to hail young Hina's achievement.
Das, from Dhing village in Assam's Nagaon district, now joins the illustrious company of star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, who won a gold in Poland in the last edition in 2016 in a world record effort. In fact, Das is the first Indian track athlete to have won a medal in the history of this competition.
