Indian cricket team's chief coach Anil Kumble's tenure might be extended for the time being.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), which met in London on Thursday, is said to have recommended extension of Kumble's tenure.

The decision, however, would only be discussed and ratified in BCCI's special general meeting (SGM) to be held in Mumbai on June 26. The CAC comprises of Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman and Sourav Ganguly.

The official mail of BCCI, however, said, "The Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) of the BCCI met today and discussed the process with regard to the selection of the head coach of the senior India men team and it was decided by the CAC to revert to the BCCI, at an appropriate time."

The mail didn't specify reasons for not conducting the interviews of six selected candidates for this high profile job.

When Kumble was appointed last year, the then BCCI president Anurag Thakur didn't follow the same procedure and announced the appointment for one year in Dharamshala — not for three years as recommended by the CAC — and without the approval of the Working Committee.

On Thursday, soon after India's match against Sri Lanka, the CAC met in a hotel in London, where it is understood that the committee was unhappy with the manner in which the situation has been handled.

Though certain quarters in the BCCI don't want Kumble's contract to be renewed when it expires after the Champions Trophy, the voices seem to be growing in favour of the former India captain to carry on.

The BCCI, however, wanted CAC to finalise the coach before the team departs for the tour of Caribbean. The CAC is said to be of opinion that Kumble has to continue as there is not enough time to appoint a new coach.

However, the insiders have a different take on the ongoing ugly spat within the Indian dressing room (read captain Virat Kohli and Kumble).

"CAC is clearly in a bind over what to do in this issue. On one hand is former skipper who has not lost a single series during his tenure as chief coach. And on the other, it's the wish of majority in dressing room to have a new coach," said a senior BCCI official on Friday.

DNA reported recently on how 10 of the current players are said to be against Kumble continuing as coach.

The ideal situation would be a status quo in the dressing room. But if that is not possible then final call lies with CAC or Committee of Administrators (COA)," added the official.

It has been learnt that CAC has backed their decision with a reasoning that Kumble has not lost a series during his one-year stint with the team.

CAC's decision to ask for more time has also raised questions over why applications were invited for coach's position. Apart from Kumble, former opener Virender Sehwag, Sunrisers Hyderabad coach Tom Moody, Englishman Richard Pybus, Afghanistan coach Lalchand Rajput and Dodda Ganesh have applied for the job.
