After claiming gold in CWG 2018, boxer Mary Kom says 'Olympics medal isn't everything' for her

With a Commonwealth Games (CWG) gold in the bag, Indian boxing star MC Mary Kom has said that Olympic glory isn't everything for her.

"Olympics medal isn't everything for me. If I can win then it's very good, but if I can't then it'll always remain like an unfulfilled dream. Will try my best and focus on each step, wish all women athletes the best. I hope in upcoming games their performance will get better," she was quoted as saying by ANI.

 

After her triumph in the Gold Coast Games, Kom dedicated her medal to her children and thanked her coaches and support staff for believing in her. "I am delighted to have won my first CWG medal. It was something that I had wanted to win since a long time and I am really happy that I have been able to do it finally. I would like to dedicate this victory to my children and all my fans back in India and the world and hope that I could continue winning more laurels for the country," she said.

The five-time world champion and Olympic bronze-medallist gave a special thanks to Boxing Federation of India (BFI) president Ajay Singh for his support. "I would like to thank the coaches, the entire support staff and everyone who believed in me. A special thanks to BFI president Ajay Singh and it is his relentless support that I have been able to achieve this," she said.

 

The boxer also said that winning nine medals in Commonwealth will be a strong building block in realising BFI President's vision of making India a boxing superpower a reality. "I would also like to congratulate the Male Boxers for their incredible performance and am sure winning 9 medals in Commonwealth will be a strong building block in realising BFI President's vision of making India a boxing superpower a reality," she added.

On her debut at the Commonwealth Games, Kom bagged India's 18th gold medal at the Gold Coast here on Saturday. The five-time world champion thrashed Northern Ireland's 21-year-old Kristina O'Hara in a unanimous point's decision in the finals of the women's 48kg boxing category. With the latest medal, India stands at the third spot in medals tally with a haul of 18 Gold, 11 Silver and 14 Bronze.
