AC Milan sack Vincenzo Montella, name Gennaro Gattuso as new coach

Italian club AC Milan has fired coach Vincenzo Montella. The Serie A club immediately announced that he would be replaced by former midfielder Gennaro Gattuso.

Montella was dismissed one day after a 0-0 home draw with Torino left big-spending Milan seventh in Serie A with 20 points from 14 games. Gattuso was previously manager of the club's youth team.

Montella was appointed Milan manager in the summer of 2016 and led the team to sixth in his first season in charge, also winning the Supercoppa Italiana.

He signed a new contract this summer and following a transfer window of heavy investment expectations were high.

However Montella failed to live up to those expectations and the club currently sit in seventh, 18 points behind league leaders Napoli.
