2019 BWF World Championships: B Sai Praneeth, PV Sindhu enter quarterfinals; HS Prannoy, K Srikanth exit

B Sai Praneeth entered his second straight World Championships quarterfinal in Basel, Switzerland, on Thursday.

The 27-year-old world No. 19 beat a higher-ranked Indonesian Anthony Sinisuka Ginting 21-19 21-13 in a 43-minute pre-quarterfinal. In the round of last eight on Friday, Sai awaits the winner of Jonatan Christie (INA) vs Jan O Jorgensen (DEN) and will look to produce his best ever World Championships performance in his third appearance.

Joining Sai in the round of last eight was last year's runner-up and fifth-seed PV Sindhu.

Sindhu defeated USA's ninth-seeded Beiwen Zhang21-14 21-6 to set up a last-eight clash with Chinese Taipei's second seed Tai Tzu Ying.

However, it was curtains for HS Prannoy and Kidambi Srikanth. Japan's Kento Momota, the world No. 1 and reigning champion, accounted for Prannoy in just the previous match on the same court that Sai played. Prannoy went down 19-21 12-21 in 55 minutes for his fifth defeat to the Japanese in as many matches.

Post his match, Prannoy rued the fact that he could not march ahead after levelling at 19-19 in the first game.

Seventh-seeded Srikanth, who lost to 12th seed Kantaphon Wangcharoen of Thailand 21-14 21-13. Thus, Srikanth's poor run over the last two years extended to another tournament.
