Winner of six Grand Slam tennis titles, Sania Mirza has opened up about her journey of balancing motherhood and career in a letter titled - 'An ode to all mothers'.

Signed by Sania Mirza as 'A Mother and a Tennis Player', the 34-year old player who gave birth to son Izhaan Mirza Malik in 2018, wrote an open letter to the women across the world who balance personal and professional goals every single day.

Sania Mirza credited American star player Serena Williams and the documentary made on her - 'Being Serena' and how much it inspired her through her journey.

"It is often said that a woman has to choose between becoming a mother and chasing her dreams," she wrote. "Today, I write this letter sharing my journey and also a little bit about the inspiration I got from Serena Williams and her journey."

Sania talked about challenges of a sportsperson after conceiving and thoughts that surround it. "When it is sports, it is not something that comes naturally to families to say that we have a daughter and we want her to become a professional sportsperson.

"Things get even more precarious when one conceives and the first thing that clouds the judgement is whether I will be able to make a comeback or not?"

Paying tribute to Williams, who has a three-year old girl, Mirza wrote, "Having seen Serena, playing in the same era and being around her and watching her gripping documentary Being Serena was like watching her in reality. It shows so much about her personality, her fighting spirit, her passion and her will to succeed even after achieving so much."

Sania also shed light on motherhood as a life experience and why every woman should go through once in her life. "Pregnancy teaches you the selfless kind of love that at least I never knew existed for me. I think pregnancy and
having a baby made me a better person."

Now after having lost weight and back to her fitness regime, Mirza said that she was back to doing what she loves the most, i.e., the sport.

"Having put-on around 23kgs during my pregnancy, I wasn't sure if I was ever going to get back to being fit and playing tennis again.

"However, I lost around 26 kilos with a lot of workout regimes and very strict diets and came back to tennis because that's what I know, love and do."
