Cristiano Ronaldo has taken the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2018 by storm with his four goals in two games for Portugal.

He scored a hat-trick against Spain in Portugal tournament opener but that effort was not enough to win the match. Portugal had held Spain at 3-3 draw before Ronaldo’s goal against Monocco gave Portugal three crucial points in Group B.

Apparently, Ronaldo had scored three goals from 70 shots in his previous three World Cup tournaments combined for Portugal (2006, 2010 and 2014) – at the 2018 World Cup, he has scored three goals from just four shots.

Ronaldo's goal was his fourth goal of the tournament, more than his combined tally at three previous finals, and left him trailing just Iran's Ali Daei (109) on the list of top international scorers.

With his goal on Wednesday against Morocco, the Real Madrid forward surpassed Hungarian legend Ferenc Puskas as Europe's all-time leading male scorer with 85 international goals.

However, Opta stats on Twitter, Ronaldo is not the leading goal scorer in the whole of Europe and the one who is ahead of him is a woman – Germany’s Birgit Prinz, who scored 128 goals for the German national women's team between 1994 and 2011.

She was a two-time FIFA Women's World Cup champion and three-time FIFA World Player of the Year before she retired from professional football seven years back. In 282 appearances in club level, she has the same number of goals as well.

Meanwhile, Ronaldo certainly has the time and potential to surpass Birgit’s record as a European footballer.

Portugal Coach Fernando Santos called Ronaldo “port wine,” saying that the latter “changes as he ages.”

"He's constantly evolving, unlike regular players he's always evolving. He won't be doing the same thing in two or three years and he's not doing what he did four or five years ago. He knows himself well and what he needs to do,” Santos said.
