If you thought the FIFA World Cup 2018 group stage produced upsets, surprises and great footballing action, it was nothing compared to results the Round of 16 matches produced.
England became the last team to qualify for the World Cup quarter-finals after a dramatic penalty shootout. England's victory against Colombia takes Gareth Southgate's team into what looks like a winnable match against Sweden, who edged out Switzerland 1-0 earlier yesterday.
Only six countries have won the World Cup in the last 50 years, but the possibility of a fresh name at least making it to the final has increased many times.
The first phase, featuring just one goalless draw and already a record number of penalties, has been marked by Germany's stunning exit, their earliest in 80 years.
However, the first day of the Round of 16 saw two of the biggest stars, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Roanldo bow out of the tournament following Argentina and Portugal’s losses to France and Uruguay respectively in Round of 16.

2010 champions Spain went out after losing to hosts Russia, while Croatia advanced with a won against Denmark.
Five-time winners Brazil beat Mexico 2-0 on Monday to advance to the quarterfinals. They will face Belgium to came back from two goals down to beat Japan 3-2.
