FIFA World Cup 2018: 5 key players in Spain v/s Portugal match

Star striker Cristiano Ronaldo will surely be a key man for Portugal when they square off with Spain in the second match of Group B in the ongoing FIFA World Cup at the Sochi's Fisht Stadium on Friday. The contest will see some of the biggest names in the world football facing off against each other. 

Here are the five players to watch out for in the Spain v/s Portugal game:

Cristiano Ronaldo

Portual will look to their main player Cristiano Ronaldo to win them the World Cup. The forward was a key figure in Portugal’s road to victory 2016 European Championship winning squad.

Ronaldo is the one player in the match who can turn the game on his individual brilliance. He is in good form and may cause a lot of problems for the Spanish defenders. Ronaldo’s presence will Portugal a chance. 

The Real Madrid star will be up against familiar friends and foes in the match. Ronaldo, who is playing his fourth World Cup, will be making his 14th appearances. 

 

Sergio Ramos

Sergio Ramos is a big match player. The ruthless defender will captain the Spain national side. He was one the key players in Spain’s 2010 World Cup success. 

Ramos will have his job cut for him as he will up against his Real Madrid teammate Ronaldo. Spain will be hoping that Ramos will keep the Portugese striker quiet for the 90 minutes. 

Ramos is also a danger at the other end of the goal with the canny ability to score form set pieces. 
 
The Real Madrid star will be playing in his fourth FIFA World Cup. He is the most experienced player in the current squad with 151 international caps. He recently led Real Madrid to their third UEFA Champions League win in a row. 

 

Pepe 

In European and Spanish football, Pepe was normally seen causing trouble for the opposition in partnership with Sergio Ramos when he was at Real Madrid. However, the 35-year-old will now have to hold the Portugal defense together.

Pepe will be in-charge of stopping the attacking talents of Spain. The clash between Diego Costa and Pepe will something to look forward too. 

One of the most experienced players in the Portugal squad, Pepe has played 91 times for the team and was an integral part of the team that has won the 2016 European Championships in France. 

 

Diego Costa

Costa is likely to lead Spanish attack ahead of Iago Aspas in this World Cup. Costa is likely to play the No. 9 role. His bullying presence will a challenge for the Portugese defense led by Pepe and Fonte.

The Brazilian-born Spanish striker is playing in his second FIFA World Cup. The 29-year-old has made 20 appearances for his country so far. 

 

Andres Iniesta 

Iniesta was the man of 2010 FIFA World Cup.

One of the greatest midfielders in world football, Andres Iniesta will be looking to lead his team to another World Cup glory. Iniesta may have left Barcelona and will move to Japan to play club football next season, but the 34-year-old legand will be a force to reckon with.  He will instrumental in creating goal scoring opportunities for his side. 

Iniesta, who scored the all important goal in the final against Netherlands in 2010,  will be playing his fourth and probably the last World Cup. Iniesta has played 126 games for the Spain national team and has won one FIFA World Cup and 2 UEFA European Championships (2008 and 2012).
