A howler from Spanish goalkeeper David de Gea allowed Cristiano Ronaldo put Portugal 2-1 up in theiro opening FIFA World Cup 2018 game on Friday night. As soon as the goal happened, twitterati did not waste any time in comparing the Manchester United goalie, who usually has safe pair of hands, to Liverpool’s Loris Karius.

A month back, Karius’ two errors in the Champions League final against Real Madrid cost Liverpool  the title.

One said: “David de Gea channeling his inner Karius. Trolling Liverpool till the end. #WorldCup #PORESP #POR #ESP”.

Another said: “De Gea had a stopover in Liverpool on his way to Russia.”

Eventually, the match ended in a draw after hat-trick hero Ronaldo's sensational free-kick two minutes from time earned Portugal a 3-3 draw with Spain in a pulsating World Cup Group B encounter.

Ronaldo had given Portugal a dream start winning and scoring a fourth minute penalty. Diego Costa levelled only for Ronaldo to put the 2016 European champions back in front just before half-time.
Costa once again got Spain back level with Nacho scoring his first ever goal giving Spain the lead, only for Ronaldo's magical 88th minute set piece to earn Portugal a share of the spoils in Sochi.

It was a remarkable signal of intent from the current Ballon d'Or winner, who had never made a serious impact in any of his previous three World Cups, only managing to score one goal in each. In one night the Real Madrid superstar doubled his World Cup finals goal tally, and made history by scoring at an eighth consecutive major tournament going back to Euro 2004, when he was still a teenager.

It was typical of the now 33-year-old to take the headlines after news from the Spain camp had dominated the build-up to this game.
