Gold finger in Beijing

The 2008 Beijing Olympic Games will be best remembered in India for the first ever individual gold medal by shooter Abhinav Bindra on August 11, followed by the bronze that wrestler Sushil Kumar (66kg freestyle) and boxer Vijender Singh (75kg middleweight) picked up.

Bindra won the 10metre air rifle event overcoming great odds and higher-ranked marksmen. Ranked only 17th at that time, few gave Bindra a chance but the 25-year old from Chandigarh shrugged off a two-point deficit in the final round to clinch the gold medal.
