Despite having just one major win this year, the Djarum Super Series in Indonesia, Saina Nehwal is not unhappy. The 19-year-old, who won the recently concluded Syed Modi International Grand Prix in Lucknow, is content to have played 17 tournaments till date and has gathered a lot of experience to make it count next year.

The reigning world junior champion feels 2009 went according to her plans. “Barring the chicken pox I don’t think there was much to complain about,” said the world No. 8, who succeeded in just making the cut for the World Championships in Hyderabad after the bout of illness.

“I could have done better than quarterfinals in the worlds but given my condition I think I gave the best I could,” she said.

After zooming up in the ranking charts in 2008, Saina’s progress stalled a bit in 2009.
She was the top seed going into the World Masters Series but lost in the semifinals to German Juliane Schenk. “Being the top seed means nothing less than a final appearance would be acceptable but honestly I was a bit tired after touring throughout the year,” she confessed.

But she is not the one for excuses. “At times you win some, you lose some,” she said in the same breath. Her plan is not to appear in too many tournaments in 2010. “I am not going to play too many tournaments in 2010 since I want to give my all in the Asians, Worlds and CWG,” said the Arjuna awardee.
