Rahul Dravid is gone. Will VVS Laxman follow suit? No one in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is willing to answer the question as yet but some indications, surely, are available. It is understood that the BCCI and the national selection committee will wait for things to happen rather than let things take place.
One learns that the selectors were thinking that Laxman will take the lead and they are surely surprised by Dravid’s sudden — although he claimed it was a well-thought-out decision — announcement.

Now that it has happened, they are adopting a wait-and-watch policy. With the next Test assignment long way away, they are in no mood to rush things. At some stage, they are hoping, the wisdom will dawn on Laxman as well, just as it did on Dravid.

Surprised as they are with Dravid’s announcement, the selectors are surely not unhappy with the development. They are relieved that they did not have to do the uncomfortable job of telling an accomplished senior to take  a bow. They are hoping Laxman will not force them to do it either.

Things, however, are fast changing in Indian cricket and the new thinking is that no player can hope to stay on in the team on the basis of mere reputation. Even Sachin Tendulkar is not untouchable, contrary to popular perception. There will come a time when the Little Master too will have to take a call. He seems to be safe for now, as all eyes are on Laxman, but not too long, if the runs are not coming.
