Yamamotoyama Ryuta giggles when asked what he eats for lunch. “Rice,” he says loudly, before turning to his interpreter who then takes over. “Rice is their staple food. Yamamotoyama prefers rice with chicken,” he informs.
One has this urge to ask how ‘much’ rice and how ‘many’ chicken, but the Japanese sumo wrestler’s 6’3 frame coupled with 267 kg of flesh prompts one to let out a gentle smile. So much for curiosity!
Given that most of us have seen the likes of commercial wrestling superstars like Yokozuna and Rikishi only on television, we aren’t aware of the ‘feats’ sumo wrestlers are capable of.
Yamamotoyama’s usher informs that the 27-year-old relished tandoori chicken on Friday afternoon.
“He was preparing to use a fork and knife, but I asked him to use his hands. And he got hold of a tangdi and got down to work,” he says. That’s it? “Kya saab! Two full tandoori chicken, two full plates of butter chicken, two full plates of rice and three cans of Pepsi. That was his lunch,” the usher adds, in one breath. “And he loves Indian tea.”
Yamamotoyama is single and ready to mingle. So does he want an Indian girlfriend? “Yes, yes,” he blushes soon after the interpreter finishes his bit. Curiously enough, Yamamotoyama was ordered to retire from the sport in April after the Japanese Sumo Association found him guilty of match fixing.
A couple of ladies in the room request him to shake a leg and Yamamotoyama more than obliges. “Do you know Salman Khan?” one of them enquires. “Salman Khan? Yes, yes,” he says.
“Okay, now we want you to do a Dabangg step,” they say. And the ladies man that he is, Yamamotoyama impresses them beyond belief. He shakes more than just a leg. He loses a bout of arm wrestling to another lady but wins her heart.
