Is it India vs China at Anfield? Who knows but thus screams the headline of a British tabloid.

It pits two Indian billionaires — Mukesh Ambani and Subrata Roy Sahara — against a Chinese government-backed business tycoon for the control of Liverpool.

A report in The Sun on Thursday said Ambani and Roy have thrown their hats into the ring and challenged the Chinese government in the battle to buy out the EPL club.

The report also said that the two Indian business tycoons have reportedly tabled their bid for Liverpool nine months after failing to buy a 51% share in the Anfield outfit. Chinese businessman Kenny Huang, has held talks about buying out the club’s £237 million debt from the Royal Bank of Scotland. There are reportedly three other parties as well.

Huang, backed by the £209 billion Chinese Investment Corporation, was favourite to replace unpopular American owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett. He is said to be backing boss Roy Hodgson with a £150 million transfer kitty.

But the Anfield auction is now wide open. “Some potential buyers have declared their interest but haven’t tabled a bid, whereas Ambani and Roy have put their money on the table. At this stage Liverpool are happy to let everyone compete against each other to get the best possible deal,” the tabloid quoted a source, as saying
Ambani, valued at £12.5 billion, owns IPL franchise Mumbai Indians, while Roy’s Sahara Group recently purchased an IPL team which is now called Sahara Pune Warriors. Sahara also sponsors the Indian cricket team.

A Reliance Industries (RIL) spokesman denied Ambani’s interest. However, a top Sahara official neither denied nor confirmed the report. “Presently our plans are on hold. We have not yet reached the bidding stage,” Abhijit Sarkar, head, corporate communications, Sahara India Pariwar, told DNA.
