The drumbeating and publicity blitz by the Indian Premier League’s (IPL) organisers and broadcasters have not seemed to work, at least so far in the fifth edition of the championship. The ratings for the Twenty20 extravaganza, broadcasted by Set Max, have plummeted once again.

Since the beginning of the league over three weeks ago, the average weekly ratings have been showing a downward trend and the latest figures indicate that the popularity of the inter-city league has taken a severe beating this year. Contrary to a rating of 3.76 in the first week, 3.65 in the second week, the latest ratings have hit a new low. After 27 matches, the average TRP or TVR lies at a lowly 3.53, according to the figures released by Tam Sports, the widely recognised agency in television ratings. The latest TVR is over six% lower than the first week’s TRPs and 3.28% down from the second week. It is also about nine% lower than the ratings at the corresponding period last year. TVR is time weighted figure which accounts for time spent by a viewer along with reach.

Cumulatively too, the reach is getting shorter.  As against 140 million by the third week last year, it is now 137 million this year. That is a drop of nearly three million viewers from last year in a span of three weeks. The cumulative reach is the absolute and unduplicated number of individuals who watched a channel/programme at least for one minute.

Set Max, however, has maintained that the channel still commands the best ratings in the prime time. “The IPL has clearly risen above all other channels in India. Not surprisingly, Max has surpassed all competition to become the No 1 channel not only in the HSM (Hindi-speaking market) markets but also at an all-India level,” a release from the channel said.

“With the prime time ratings and share far outpacing the competition, the IPL continues to the most sought-after property on television. The league has already reached out to 124 million people in India in just its second week,” the release said.
